SUMMARY:Protecting Group Strategies in Carbohydrate Synthesis and Other Chemical Reactions
DESCRIPTION:The Dipharma Group is pleased to invite you to the talk: \n\nProtecting Group Strategies in Carbohydrate Synthesis and Other Chemical Reactions\nDate: Thursday May 14th \, 2026 \nTime: 4:00 – 8:00 pm\nLocation: The Hangar\, 460 Forbes Blvd\nSouth San Francisco (Oyster Point)\, CA 94080 \nSpeaker: Dr. PETER WUTS\, author of Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis\, 6th  ed.\, May 2025 \n\nModerator: LLOYD SIMONS\, Director of R&D\, Dipharma Inc. \nPROGRAM\n\n04:00 – 04:15    Badge Pick-Up\n04:15 – 04:30    Introduction by Dr. Lloyd Simons\n04:30 – 06:00    Invited Talk by  Dr. Peter Wuts\n06:00 – 08:00   Appetizers and Beverages\n\nJOIN US\nTo attend the event\, please register here\n\nABSTRACT\nCarbohydrates are a ubiquitous class of natural products that have a profound influence on a variety of physiological processes and are key components to the activity of numerous natural products such as erythromycin.  In general\, protecting groups play a critical role in oligosaccharide synthesis\, as well as in oligonucleotides such as DNA\, and RNA synthesis. The careful selection of the protecting group family and the synthesis route are intertwined and can impact the quality and desired attributes of the final API such as yield\, purity\, RSMs and COG. \nIn this talk\, two topics will be covered: \n\nHow various protecting groups influence the rate and stereochemical outcome of glycosylation through reactivity tuning\, hydrogen bonding\, neighboring group participation\, stereoelectronic effects and conformational control.\n\n  \n\nProtecting groups not only affect glycosylation but have a profound effect on numerous other chemical reactions.  Some examples from synthetic processes that are not related to the process of glycosylation such as the metathesis reaction\, additions to imines and carbonyls\, among other reactions\, will be presented.  Overall\, this is a very broad subject that can only be briefly covered in this presentation\, but the idea is to present the fact that protecting groups are generally not innocent bystanders that can be ignored.\n\n\nBRIEF BIO:\n \nDr. Peter G. M. Wuts is globally recognized as an expert in organic synthesis. His ex-pertise spans process development\, methodology development\, and total synthesis. Throughout his distinguished career at Upjohn\, Pharmacia & Upjohn\, Pharmacia\, Pfizer\, and Kalexsyn\, Dr. Wuts has made invaluable scientific contributions. He has extensive experience in synthesizing steroids\, aminocyclitol antibiotics\, peptide isosteres\, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons\, paclitaxel\, cyclic peptides\, and other heterocycles. Dr. Wuts has authored over 90 scientific publications and is also the author of Protective Groups in Organic Synthesis.\n \n  \nCan’t attend\, but still want to get in touch?
